Blender & SL

—————————————————————————
Blender - (Wikipedia) is a free software 3D animation program. It can be used for modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, skinning, animating, rendering, particle and other simulating, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications. Blender has a robust feature set similar in scope and depth to other high-end 3D software such as Softimage|XSI, Cinema 4D, 3ds Max and Maya. These features include advanced simulation tools such as rigid body, fluid, and softbody dynamics, modifier based modeling tools, powerful character animation tools, a node based material and compositing system and Python for embedded scripting.

Bypassing Compression Artifacts (Tip From Camilla)

“export your displacement texture to 256*256
then open it in gimp, reduce it to 32*32, cubic interpolation
then stretch it to 128*128, no interpolation
its a pain, but the only way to bypass compression artifacts that I found”

**** Introduction ****

These Blender scripts will import a “sculptie map” ( https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_FAQ )
and bake any mesh changes back to it.

It creates a mesh object with appropriate wrap and pole closing for the
selected sculpt type.

**** Installation ****

copy ‘import_sculptie.py’ & ‘render_sculptie.py’ to your Blender scripts
directory.

There’s an optional script called uvcalc_eac.py - this is an
experiment in unwrapping any object to a sculptie UV map. It’s
an equal area cylindrical unwrap. For some stuff (eg Suzanne)
it works great, for some it’s unusable. In all cases you’ll need to
tidy up the generated UV Map. Usually making sure the edges are
right is enough to be able to use the bake sculpty script. If you
install it, you’ll see “EAC Unwrap” as an option in the uv unwrap
menu. Originally this script was called planar_unwrap.py, prior users
can delete that version from their scripts directory.

Run Blender and in the “File - Import” menu you should see a new option
for ‘Second Life Sculptie’

If the option is missing, select the scripts window and use
“Scripts - Update Menus” to refresh the menus.

**** Usage ****

Simply select ‘Second Life Sculptie’ from the “File - Import” menu and
choose the sculptie map to import (hint: click filename with middle mouse
button to open quickly). You will be given an options dialog that will
let you select the sculptured prim type, the scale (these match the sizes
in Second Life) and whether to remove doubles from the mesh.

If you disable removing the doubles, then the mesh will be left as a plane
so seams and poles will have multiple vertice. You will need to use box
selection or other similar methods to keep those together. Removing
doubles makes an easier mesh to work with as each pole should be a
single point and the seams will be joined.

To update the sculptie maps select “Render - Bake Second Life sculpties”
This will update the sculptie maps for all selected meshes. They will all
use the same scale, so if you want maximum detail in a sculptie only
select one before baking. If you are doing animated sculpties then
all objects should have the same centre and any required offset done
in mesh edit mode. Select all stages of the animation to bake at the
same time (making sure each has a different uv image).

You can see and save the map images in the UV/Image Editor window.

After saving, the sculptie map is scaled to one Blender Unit (1m in
Second Life) in all three directions. The console window will have
the LSL script commands to recreate the sculpties in SL.

The exporter uses the UV map so any object mapped to a full flat
square will work. Remember to create a image for it to bake to

How to Make Sculpted Prims with Blender

Another Article About Sculpted Prims in BlenderPrim.Blender is script to get your Blender meshes into Second Life. While I haven’t tried it myself, this apparently makes a great alternative to Google’s Sketchup, whose primitives are well… a bit too primitive in game. Unlike Blender and Second Life, Sketchup also doesn’t run on a Linux machine. “- SelectParks
